Pixie and her two siblings were rescued from an informal settlement during December 2020. The tiny kittens were living underneath a braiding salon where they were feeding off scraps of porridge and bones. They were extremely thin, dirty, injured from barbed wire lying around, and very distrusting of humans.

They had severe snuffles which, if left untreated, affects the eyes and can cause blindness. Pixie and her brother Kiko were the two lucky ones and responded well to treatment. Their sister, unfortunately, had to have one eye removed. They were taken into my care and responded very well to the treatment and good nutrition. Pixie is still struggling with the eye infections that flare up every now and again.

Leanie contacted me after she’d seen photos of Pixie and the adoption process was started. Pixie was collected on the 25th of January 2021 and the rest is like a fairy tale. She’s living her best life with her family.

This is what keeps the Harties Feral Cat Rescue Volunteers motivated. We may not be able to save all the cats, but every life matters and we’ll continue our mission to live in a community where no kittens are born on the street.

Leanie Labuschagne, Pixie’s owner, shares...

Meet Pixie, the enigmatic cat who entered my life in 2021, a year marked by the infamous pandemic. Born in November 2020, she’s what we affectionately call a “Covid Baby”, and she’s since filled my life with laughter, love, and endless antics.

Pixie’s extraordinary journey began when I adopted her from Harties Feral Cat Rescue in February 2021. Born in November 2020, she started her new life in an apartment building, where she spent her first two years with an older brother/friend, and together they created a symphony of excitement and playful chaos. But outside remained a mystery to her. To remedy this, we introduced her to the world in a harness on a leash. Watching her stumble and quake at the sound of passing cars was simultaneously heart-warming and comical – a true testament to her unbridled bravery.

Then came the big move as we merged households with my now-husband, and Pixie acquired not one but three older sisters – two cats and a dog! Terrified at first, she faced her fears head-on, slowly learning to trust her new family. She discovered the joys of freedom, the scent of grass, and the grandeur of towering trees. And, of course, she developed an unabashed crush on my husband.

It’s official, Pixie is head over paws in love.

Despite her delicate demeanour, Pixie is tougher than she looks. She battled a severe bout of pancreatitis when she was barely a year old. Throughout it all, she never flinched, choosing cuddles and love over fear. Her love-hate relationship with water is a spectacle to behold. She enjoys splashing it out of her bowl but loathes it when it dares to touch her furry coat.

Now, let’s talk about Pixie’s rodent-hunting skills, or rather, the lack thereof. One unwelcome mouse visitor left me trembling with fear, only to be found moments later in a playful tête-à-tête with Pixie. Yes, you read that right.

But it’s Pixie’s larger-than-life personality that truly steals the show. Fear isn’t in her vocabulary, and her intelligence is off the charts. She’s taught me more about life and myself than I ever thought possible. In the grand tapestry of our existence, Pixie is the splash of vibrant colour that makes it all worthwhile.

As we look ahead, we’ve realised that Pixie needs a sibling to share her adventures and zoomies. She spends her nights in a tower fit for royalty, gazing out over her kingdom with a regal air. Indeed, she’s the queen of our hearts.

In conclusion, Pixie, our beloved Baba, is more than just a pet. She’s a source of endless amusement, a survivor, and a teacher. In her, we’ve found a kindred spirit, a reminder that life is meant to be lived with a dash of humour and a whole lot of love. So, here’s to Pixie – our quirky, fearless, and utterly lovable feline companion. Cheers to the adventures that lie ahead, with Pixie leading the way!
