Maverick was rescued by Melody Pretorius when she received an urgent phone call from an employee at a nearby mine that they’d found a tiny kitten in a tipper container. He was covered in chrome dust and dirt when Melody got to him, but what a cute kitten he was! He was taken in and cared for by one of our incredible foster moms, Mariska.

Melody decided to send his photo to her niece, Tammy Caldwell, who, like all of us, is a huge cat lover. It was love at first sight! Tammy promptly said she was adopting him. Lucky little Maverick was only in foster care for a week before he went to his happy forever home. He moved right in and took over the household with his beautiful nature, naughty antics and loving character, and has since taken care of Tammy’s new rescue, Harley. They’re inseparable.

New mommy, Tammy, shares...

When Maverick was a couple of weeks old, my aunt Melody, who’s also part of the Harties Feral Cat Rescue organisation, sent me his photo, and I instantly fell in love with him. I’d just lost my beautiful tabby, Star, to FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) and our hearts were broken. When we received the news about Maverick, I knew he had to be a part of our family.

Because I had bottle-fed kittens before, I was able to pick Maverick up when he was about five weeks and continue bottle-feeding him. Joanne and my aunt were comfortable with me having him at such a young age.

I drove through to Harties, met with Mariska, who was fostering Maverick, fell in love with him all over again, and brought him home. One eye was infected, but we treated it quickly with the help of our local vet. Within a few weeks, his eye had cleared up, he was off the bottles, he was enjoying his wet food and biscuits, and he’d made friends with all my other cats.

In February this year, we added another little rescue to our family Harley. Maverick instantly took to her, and the pair have been the best of friends ever since. They play every morning and evening and are always up to mischief together. They sleep together on the bed at night and are always around each other. We’re so grateful that Maverick found a friend in Harley. Nothing makes us happier than watching the two of them together.

Maverick also loves to be around people and is always with one of us at home. If you’re on one side of the house and he’s on the other, he calls for us, we call back, and he comes running. We’re so fortunate to have a cat like Maverick. He brings us so much joy and laughter, and we’re so happy to have him as part of our family.
