Dash’s Journey: From Abandoned and Injured to Thriving and Loved

Every rescue dog carries a story, but some stories stay with you long after the adoption papers are signed. Dash’s journey is one of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of a second chance.

When Dash was found wandering alone in Venterspos, in Gauteng’s West Rand, he was in a heart-breaking condition. A severe wound around his neck suggested a difficult past, while his fearful demeanour reflected the uncertainty of life on the streets.

No one knew how long this handsome black dog had been fending for himself or how much suffering he’d endured before help finally arrived.

The team at No More Tears Animal Rescue stepped in, bringing Dash to safety and ensuring he received the veterinary care he desperately needed. His wounds were treated, his body began to heal, and slowly, his gentle nature started to shine through.

Like many rescue dogs, Dash had experienced hardship, but he never lost his ability to trust. Despite everything he’d been through, he remained affectionate, loyal, and eager for companionship. Those who spent time with him quickly fell in love with his sweet temperament and kind heart.

As his recovery progressed, the rescue team launched an extensive search for his owners. His story and photographs were shared widely throughout the community and across social media platforms, with the hope that someone would recognise him and bring him home. But no one came.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. While Dash waited patiently at the No More Tears kennels in Tarlton, it became clear that his future wouldn’t involve returning to his past. Instead, he’d need a new beginning.

Throughout his time at the kennels, Dash became a favourite among volunteers and supporters. He greeted visitors with enthusiasm, enjoyed every moment of attention, and never stopped hoping that one day someone would choose him.

That day finally arrived. A loving family in Empangeni saw Dash’s story and knew he belonged with them. After months of waiting, he finally left kennel life behind and embarked on the journey to his forever home.

For rescuers, adoption day is always emotional, but there’s no greater reward than seeing a deserving dog find the family they’ve been waiting for.

The story doesn’t end there. Recently, No More Tears Animal Rescue received an update that brought smiles to everyone involved in Dash’s journey. Not only has he settled beautifully into his new home, but he’s absolutely thriving.

Surrounded by love, comfort, and security, Dash has embraced his new life with enthusiasm. Even more heart-warming is the special friendship he’s formed with his new canine companion. The two dogs have become inseparable, spending their days playing, exploring, and enjoying every moment together. The frightened and injured dog who once wandered the streets alone is now healthy, confident, and deeply loved.

For the team at No More Tears Animal Rescue, updates like these are a powerful reminder of why rescue work matters. Behind every adoption is an opportunity to change a life. Behind every second chance is the possibility of a remarkable transformation.

Today, Dash is no longer defined by the wound on his neck or the loneliness of his past. He’s defined by the love that surrounds him. He’s defined by the family who chose him. He’s defined by the happiness he now enjoys every day.

Most importantly, Dash is living proof that sometimes the happiest endings come to those who wait the longest.

And for Dash, that happy ending has become a beautiful new beginning.

For some reason (divine intervention) Dash came up on my social feed in the beginning of May. The first thing that struck me was how much he looked like our current fur baby, Sophie – they could easily have been twins! (In real life, Dash is a little bit smaller than Sophie, is more of a Collie/Husky mix and is definitely not a water baby like she is.)

I was travelling quite a bit during May and nervous about adopting a completely unknown dog, but I was so touched by Dash’s story and felt that I needed to at least reach out and find out a bit more about him.

I made contact with Stephan who gave me all the info on Dash and basically said that Dash is “just a lekker guy”, which made me smile – and still makes me smile because he is. I chatted to my hubby; we made an application to adopt Dash and were approved!

He had to travel all the way from the rescue kennels to Ballito – over 650km – with a transportation company. We were quite shocked to find that he stayed in the boot section of a small hatchback the whole way from Krugersdorp to Ballito, but he seemed fine.

Dash was a bit carsick but still put on a brave face for the next hour’s travel to Empangeni, where he’s definitely found his forever home with us on a sugar-cane farm. He’s such a sweet boy. He gets on so well with his two new sisters – Whitney, a 12-year-old Maltese cross, and Sophie, a five-year-old Border Collie-Golden Retriever cross – both of whom can be a bit bossy.

Dash loves his little comforts – a fluffy pillow, a soft couch – and has slowly become more and more demanding of scratches, snuggles and tummy tickles.

He’s been for his vet check-up and had to have some stitches removed that were irritating him. Our vet says that Dash is probably closer to ten years than five, but he’s a very energetic and playful “young” man – he absolutely loves his afternoon 4km walks on the farm.

He plays pretend rough-and-tumbles with Sophie, has found his bark to warn off any dangerous threats (like mongooses), and likes his squeaky toys.

Dash is struggling to adjust to the heat of KZN (even though it’s winter) and goes from sleeping on his couch in our room at night to sleeping on the shower floor in our room – just to cool down. We’ve therefore made the decision to leave the aircon on for him as Sophie enjoys sleeping with the aircon on just as much as he does.

We’re very much in love with our happy little guy, Dash, who’s adapted extremely well to this new adventure in his life and shows a new little lovable side to his personality every day.
