Rescuing Isabella

9th Mar, 2018
When I met Isabella, she was in a terrible state; she had what seemed like hundreds of ticks and fleas crawling all over her body, stuck like mussels to a rock between her paw pads and in her ears and eyelids. She was severely underweight, malnourished, and had open wounds on her body that the vet would later say looked like bite wounds… ...read more

Four-week-old Toby and his three siblings were dumped on the doorstep of a veterinary practice one chilly night in October 2017. Cindy Washington, who fosters kittens for Capetonians Against Animal Abuse, received the call for help and rushed out to fetch the little orphans and took them home to foster. ...read more

My furry family

2nd Mar, 2018
Fluffy and Dexter are truly rags-to-riches dogs. Both had suffered terrible neglect and punishment for normal doggy behaviour. And both went on to find a wonderful home with the Lewis family… ...read more

Setting Baby J free

28th Feb, 2018
The skinny four-month-old Black-backed Jackal (Rooijakkels) was found, badly hurt, in the parking lot of a popular shopping centre on the 19th of January 2018. His back leg was injured, the bone and sinew exposed, and, disturbingly, a dog collar hung around his fragile neck. ...read more

We’d always wanted to add dogs to our family and intended to adopt rescue dogs when we got to the point at which we could open our home to furry friends. And we knew that if we ever had to move, they would be coming with us. ...read more

It was winter 2013 and my many cats often lined themselves along the gate in the evenings, gazing out into the street before I called them in for their soft food treat, thereafter remaining in the house for the night. One night I saw a long-legged Siamese-type cat on the other side of the gate talking to my cats. This happened a few times and I realised it was then disappearing to an empty house down the lane behind us. ...read more

The handsome black-and-gold German Shepherd dog was found wandering around Main Road, Plettenberg Bay, on the 18th of September 2017 and taken to Plett Animal Welfare Service (PAWS). PAWS posted his picture on their Facebook page in search of his owner but nobody claimed him, and so, after the prescribed holding period, the healthy two-year-old, which PAWS kennel manager Tracy van der Byl had named Blackie, was put up for adoption. ...read more

When Bentley arrived, curiosity and excitement got the better of me and I raced straight to his stable. All I could do was stare, open-mouthed. Looking down at me was a beautiful, tall, grey gelding with soft eyes and dusty-white eyelashes. In November 2012, I was privileged to meet the horse that changed my life. He was meant to be my dad’s but, secretly, I hoped he’d end up being mine. ...read more

Molly came to us through friends of friends and was the first Beagle we’d ever had – she completely stole our hearts. Our other dog, Cazzy, a 14-year-old Dobermann Pinscher-mix, had a few health scares in 2017 and so we decided that five-year-old Molly needed a playmate to keep her busy. ...read more

A Miracle for Missy

7th Feb, 2018
Missy was a “box kitten” brought into the vet with her siblings after someone found them in a box by a petrol station. Working at a vet as I do, you tend to want to take everyone home – as anyone will tell you, all my animals are rescued or adopted. ...read more
