“Hungry and scared, all alone on the side of the N3 highway, one of the busiest highways during peak festive season, we stuck together, like best friends do. Looking out for each other in the worst possible circumstances. Hundreds of cars whizzed by us, the noise deafening, the gusts of wind buffeting our bodies.
We were missing our home and family, not understanding what had gone wrong, when the miracle happened. One of the cars stopped.
A kind family on their way to their summer holiday destination spotted us and took the time to save us from the danger. They brought us to the Heidelberg SPCA where the friendly staff gave us food, water and a warm place to rest our tired bodies…”
Against the odds
These may well have been the thoughts of the two souls we named Spokie and Nunu. They couldn’t look more different – one a large white-and-black dog, the other a scrappy little brown terrier-mix – but they were as close as can be.
We networked them on Facebook; Elmarie Visagie fell in love with them and their story and decided to adopt them both. Friends have to stick together, after all.
Spokie and Nunu – best friends who survived against all odds. Thank you, Elmarie, for giving them a forever and loving home.
Loving Spokie and Nunu
By Elmarie Visagie
Spokie and Nunu had been abandoned on the busy N3 highway during the festive season by some human that clearly doesn’t have a heart.
When I saw the post on SPCA Heidelberg’s Facebook page, I was immediately attracted to these two precious dogs that they didn’t want to separate. I grabbed the phone to arrange to meet them… and what an awesome connection we had – I fell in love immediately.
I promptly applied for their adoption and, thank God, I was approved! So, Bow, my adorable loving Grey Dane, and I drove from Meyerton to Heidelberg to meet them (the approval was on condition that he’d be fine with them). Whoop whoop! They also connected and two weeks later, Nunu and Spokie were at their new loving home. My home.
They are so happy and all three of them are totally attached to each other. And so am I.
