Megs Mutts Rescue is a pro-life animal welfare organisation located in Plumstead, in the Western Cape. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome and sterilise domestic animals, as well as provide veterinary services to local indigent communities.
A two-hour drive to Atlantis to rescue Tiger, a Boerboel on his last legs, was our first rescue over 15 years ago. Next was Cassie, the blind pup, and soon after came Boxer Zoe… and so the flood gates opened. We believe that all animals deserve a second chance to lead a happy, loving life. We’ve been going strong ever since, although we’re finding it increasingly challenging to source food and funds for our veterinary care.
On a mission for mutts (and more)
Megs Mutts aims to assist animals in and around the Cape Flats settlements as well as the Bonnytoun informal settlement in Wynberg. Over the past year or so, the number of pets who’ve found themselves homeless due to abandonment has skyrocketed because of the economic downturn and unemployment. Providing temporary assistance with pet food removes one potential reason for families considering relinquishing or abandoning their pets, and it will help them keep the pets they love. Every day that these families can feed their pets is one more day those pets stay at home.
We strongly believe in the importance of having dogs and cats sterilised in order to reduce the number of unwanted animals being born, which also lightens the load on the community.
As an animal rescue, you learn there’s a great need out there for help for not only the animals but the people too. As such, we try to help out in more ways wherever we can. We’re proud to have headed up many community projects, from rebuilding homes to back-to-school packs and care packs for babies in need at Mowbray Maternity Hospital. In Bonnytoun, we’d dearly like to restart the container school and feeding scheme, and we’ve recently paired with and act as a conduit between other bigger organisations and community members to help uplift the community.
When homeless animals find their way to us, we rely on fosters, as we don’t have kennelling facilities. And, at any given time, we have as few as 15 or as many as 30 dogs in our care; we also have five resident cats and six permanent golden oldies. So, please drop us a line if you can offer a furry a temporary home.
You can help
As a registered pro-life organisation, we rely on the support of caring individuals to assist us in fulfilling our mission of providing intervention, education, veterinary assistance, fostering and rehoming of animals. We’re deeply grateful to all those who support our work in any way.
Our goal
- To assist individuals and families facing economic difficulty by providing pet food to help them keep their pets.
- Keeping our many rescues comfy and well fed over the winter period.
- Assisting smaller feeding schemes with food and blankets.
- Sterilising as many animals as possible, for which we need sponsors, as sterilisation costs (at welfare rates) start at between R450 and R700, depending on the size and species of the animal.
Much needed
We always need puppy food, kitten food, adult dog and cat food, and cat litter, as our furries are growing fast and eating us out of house and home! We also have the animals in the informal settlements that desperately need assistance.
Please sponsor food and cat litter by making a small donation or sending us some food via Pet Heaven or Takealot.
