The Animal Guardians (TAG) has been helping animals in need for going on 11 years. Based in Benoni, our animal welfare organisation was founded by Annalise Jungmann and Katelyn O’Neill.

Our mission is to prevent cruelty by advocating sterilisation, reducing unwanted litters, educating the public on how to properly care for their pets, and providing a safe environment for animals in need until such time as they find their forever homes.

TAG in action

Our fully functional shelter houses 80 dogs and 75 cats at maximum capacity, as well as our resident geese, ducks, rabbits, chickens and our pig, Pigsuvious.

We have an outreach programme where we assist underprivileged communities with their pets. This is accomplished by means of compulsory pet sterilisation (this must be agreed to before we’ll assist), food parcels for their animals, collars, leads, tick and flea treatment, basic treatments, veterinary care where necessary, and education regarding the proper care of their pets. We use roughly three tons of food a month between our kennels and outreach programme.

We have a thrift store – open seven days a week – to generate much-needed funding. This goes towards caring for the animals at our shelter and the outreach programme.

We hold monthly vaccination days and sterilisation days with one of our vets. We offer these services at a reduced cost to those who want to be responsible pet owners but can’t afford standard veterinary costs, and sponsor sterilisations for those who can’t afford to have their pets sterilised.

We’ve done well over 15,800 sterilisations over the last 11 years.

We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the dogs and cats in our care. Strict home checks apply as part of our adoption procedure and every animal is sterilised and vaccinations brought up to date before leaving for their new home.

Our funds are generated by our thrift store, donations of goods, and monetary donations from the public, as well as fundraising events. Donations of any of the below are always greatly appreciated.

• Pre-loved goods for our thrift store.
• Dry dog and cat food, blankets, HTH (used for kennel washing and disinfecting), bleach, beds, collars, leashes and harnesses go a long way in assisting with the costs of the day-to-day running of our shelter.
• Old tiles, mesh/fencing and corrugated roofing, shade cloth, and bricks are used for kennel/play area repairs and maintenance.
• Monetary donations to go towards veterinary care and running costs.
