The Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children

7th Nov, 2016

“Where Horses and Children come together to learn from one another”

The Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children is a registered non-profit organisation that rescues abused, neglected, and unwanted horses and then pairs them with children and people suffering from intellectual disabilities or mental illness from surrounding impoverished areas. These incredible animals and the trained staff at Tom Ro Haven work together to help people in need.

The Cape Flats and surrounding rural areas of Philippi, Ottery, and Schaapkraal are crime-ridden and poverty-stricken. Driving through the areas, many horses and ponies can be seen, and there is a great interest in these animals in the area. Tom Ro’s aim is to build on this interest and do something positive about the children and vulnerable adults living in poverty through equine-assisted therapy.

This incredible haven for animals and people is in desperate need of funds as we do not receive help from government or corporates and receive very little in donations each month.

Tom Ro Mission Statement: To provide a safe haven for all equines, and to use these horses to educate and facilitate safe, healing interactions between people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

They do this through:

  • Rescuing and rehabilitating horses and ponies
  • Working with underprivileged children
  • Helping adults with mental disabilities
  • Helping crime victims
  • Helping children and adults suffering from depression
  • School programmes and community service
  • Riding lessons
  • Conservation
  • General animal care
  • Equine-assisted therapy
  • Rescue and rehabilitation of equines
  • Corporate functions

Invitation to the Tom Ro Haven Open Day!

We are having our official Open Day on the 12th of November 2016 to celebrate how far we have come, where we are going, and to outline how individuals, corporates and volunteers contribute to enriching the lives of those who do not have a voice in our society. The Haven welcomes YOU to join us in an afternoon of fun, information and networking – you will get to meet our current rescues http://www.tomrohaven.org.za/our-horses and committee members.

The event will be held at the yard in Cape Point, Plateau Road. (Please look for our sign.)

Time: 15:00 – 18:00

On arrival, you’ll receive a welcome drink – we’ll also supply some light snacks. This will be followed by a presentation, whereafter you will meet everyone. T-shirts and hats will be on sale, and we’ll have an exciting raffle for which all guests can purchase tickets (funds raised will go towards the Haven’s work). We look forward to seeing you there!
